Koalas in Singapore zoo adopt local names

The article is about the koalas in Singapore adopting local names such as Cantik, Sayang, Nila, and Manja. The four names were selected from a crowd-sourced koala nicknaming campaign organsied by the Singapore Zoo in July, Wildlife Reserves Singapore. The four female koalas are on a six-month loan from Australia to mark Singapore's 50th anniversary of independence, and the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between both countries.
Although I am not sure why their names are all in Malay, but since the koalas will only be here for 6 months, it is not very appropriate to rename the koalas. In the article, the author stated that they may become permanent gifts if Singapore grow enough eucalyptus leaves for them, but how can we be so sure that we would be able to grow enough food for them? If they are to be returned to Australia, they may be confused once again because their names would switch back to the previous English ones.

  1. I feel that the Koalas can be renamed since they belong legally to Singapore for the 6 months. Koalas are known to be smart animals, so they can adapt very quickly to changes. A change in name would not really affect their lifestyles, since all they do in the zoo is just sleep and eat and face the visitors. I think instead of focusing on whether to rename the Koalas, we can thank the Australians for loaning us such beautiful animals to see.
